Mining Truck Market Size Gains Momentum with Expanding Surface Mining Activities

Surface mining is an important application area for mining trucks because large open-pit operations require substantial transportation capacity to move minerals, overburden, and waste. Mining trucks are commonly integrated with excavators, loaders, crushers, and other equipment to create coordinated material-handling systems.

The mining truck market is projected to grow from USD 16.56 billion in 2024 to USD 24.79 billion by 2035. Market Research Future identifies surface mining as the largest application segment, while underground mining is experiencing faster development.

Surface mines generally provide greater operating space than underground mines, allowing the deployment of large rigid dump trucks. These vehicles can carry substantial loads over dedicated haul roads and support high-volume material transportation.

Rigid dump trucks dominate the truck-type segment because their construction is well suited to heavy-duty mining applications. Their rigid chassis and large payload capacity make them suitable for large open-pit projects.

The 120–250 tons payload segment currently holds the largest market share. These trucks can provide a balance between transportation capacity, maneuverability, and operating requirements across various mining projects.

Larger trucks above 250 tons are also gaining momentum. Large mining projects can use high-capacity vehicles to move more material per cycle and potentially reduce the number of transportation trips.

Automation is increasingly relevant to surface mining because haul routes can often be mapped and controlled within defined operating areas. Autonomous trucks can use sensors and digital navigation systems to follow routes and coordinate with loading and unloading equipment.

Electrification is another emerging development. Electric mining trucks can potentially reduce direct emissions and operating noise. However, charging infrastructure and energy management remain important considerations for large-scale surface mining operations.

Underground mining is also developing as mining companies pursue deeper mineral resources. Smaller and more maneuverable equipment can be important in underground environments where operating space is limited.

Regional mining activity is supporting demand across North America, Asia-Pacific, South America, Europe, and the Middle East and Africa. Countries with substantial mineral resources are investing in mining infrastructure and equipment.

The future of surface mining truck operations is expected to involve greater automation, digital fleet management, electrification, and higher-capacity vehicles. These technologies can help mining companies address productivity, safety, and environmental requirements.
