The subsea engineering market uses finite element analysis and physical scale-model testing to validate installation procedures before offshore execution. ROV intervention analysis ensures that remotely operated vehicles can access all required connectors, valves, and interfaces given the visibility, lighting, and dexterity limitations of underwater work.

The subsea engineering market is also advancing the state of the art in materials engineering. Subsea equipment must resist seawater corrosion, hydrogen embrittlement from cathodic protection, and sulfide stress cracking from sour service. The subsea engineering market specifies materials with documented resistance to these failure modes, and requires extensive qualification testing for new alloys or coatings. Corrosion allowance—extra wall thickness that can be consumed by corrosion over the design life—is calculated and added to carbon steel components. For components that cannot tolerate corrosion, the subsea engineering market specifies corrosion-resistant alloys or protective cladding. As oil and gas reserves become more challenging—higher pressures, higher temperatures, more corrosive fluids—the subsea engineering market will continue to innovate, providing the technical solutions that make deepwater production economically feasible and environmentally safe.
