The global shift toward renewable energy is creating new opportunities for metals used in clean-energy technologies. Silver is particularly important to photovoltaic manufacturing because its conductivity makes it suitable for electrical contacts and metallization. The continued expansion of solar installations is therefore becoming a major influence on silver consumption.

The Silver Market is expected to reach 65.35 kilotons by 2035 from 40.42 kilotons in 2025, growing at a 4.95% CAGR during 2026–2035. Utility-scale solar expansion is identified as a major demand catalyst, while urban-scale solar projects in emerging economies provide additional opportunities.

Solar cell manufacturers have been reducing the quantity of silver used per cell through finer screen printing, improved architectures, and material-thrifting techniques. However, the rapid increase in global photovoltaic capacity can offset some of these reductions. TOPCon and heterojunction technologies are also influencing metallization requirements.

Government policies supporting renewable energy are reinforcing this trend. Large-scale solar programs in Asia, North America, Europe, and emerging economies are creating sustained demand for photovoltaic components. India is also becoming increasingly important because of rooftop solar expansion and policies supporting domestic electronics manufacturing.

The market faces some substitution pressure. Copper and other conductive materials are being investigated as alternatives to silver in selected photovoltaic applications. These technologies could reduce silver intensity over time, particularly when silver prices become elevated.

Nevertheless, silver retains important advantages in conductivity and established manufacturing processes. Its role in high-efficiency photovoltaic cells remains significant, particularly as the global energy system becomes more electrified.

Asia-Pacific is at the center of this development. The region accounted for around 53.4% of global silver consumption in 2025, with China playing a major role in solar manufacturing. India is also emerging as a fast-growing consumption center.

Recycling will become increasingly important as solar installations expand. Recovering silver from end-of-life photovoltaic panels can provide a secondary supply source while supporting circular-economy objectives.

Overall, renewable-energy deployment is expected to remain one of the most influential factors shaping silver demand. Companies involved in mining, refining, recycling, photovoltaic manufacturing, and conductive-material technologies can benefit from the long-term growth of solar infrastructure.
